What is Our Responsibility as a Muslim When Someone Dies
Invite them to Gatherings
This is crucial since when there is a loss people are able to distance themselves from their families rather then dua for when someone dies and do not want to “bother” them. Even if they constantly say “No,” still invite them to come out. Do not add layers of rejection or loss to the difficult transition in your life.
After the Funeral of the Decease be there for them
The funeral may have ended, but that doesn’t mean that your obligations have ended. As a person who has a friend, be there for them whenever it becomes quiet. They’re struggling to adjust to an entirely new life without the person they love and are trying to count every single day without the person.
Show up
Don’t not say “If you need anything, let me know.” Simply be there. Bring food, flowers and just be there. There is no need to know the best phrase to use in order to “fix it.” Just simply say “I am here for you, anything you want to say or do I may not understand, but I can listen.”
Have a Conversation
Have a conversation about the good and the bad, share your memories and share your personal stories. This is a wonderful opportunity to remember the loved one you cherish, and also assist your friend in having an alternative conversation to the negative ones they’re having.
